Indian Territories

Indian territories, or reservation lands, were designated as part of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. In 1906, the independent Indian Territory was dissolved to make way for Statehood on Nov. 16, 1907. See the below list of Indian Agencies that were established by the U.S. Government to administer to the tribes during the Indian Territorial period.

Absentee Shawnee Linda K. Lewis Migrated to Indian Territory in 1839-1840.
Cherokee Nation   One of the "Five Civilized Tribes".
Cherokee Outlet   Area was settled as a result of the land run held September 16, 1893.
Cherokee Strip   Area was settled as a result of the land run held September 16, 1893.
Cheyenne & Arapaho   Cheyenne-Arapaho members were allotted homesteads and settlement of the remainder of the land was decided by a land run held April 19, 1892.
Chickasaw Nation   One of the "Five Civilized Tribes".
Choctaw Nation April Makerney One of the "Five Civilized Tribes".
Citizen Potawatomi   Relocated from Kansas starting in 1872, following the Treaty of 1867.
Comanche, Kiowa, & Apache  Darren McCathern Settlement of this area was decided by a land lottery instead of a race for claims. The opening occurred August 1, 1901. This was the last large land opening in the state of Oklahoma.
Creek Nation Darren McCathern One of the "Five Civilized Tribes".
Delaware (Lenape)   Majority settled in the the Nowata - Washington County area
Eastern Shawnee Linda K. Lewis Relocated July 1831, following the passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830.
Iowa   The Iowa Tribe began relocating to Indian Territory in 1878, and a formal reservation was established there by executive order in 1883.
Kaw (Kanzas/Kansas)   Relocated from Kansas in 1872-1873. Located in the far north area of Kay Co.
Kickapoo   Relocated in 1873, with a formal reservation assigned by Executive Order in 1883.
Miami   Relocated from Kansas in 1867 via the Treaty of 1867.
Modoc   The Modoc were forcibly relocated to Indian Territory on October 12, 1873.
Nez Perce   First exiled to Kansas in 1877 after surrendering at the Battle of Bear Paw Mountain, then subsequently moved to Indian Territory in 1878-1879.
No Man's Land LaRae Halsey-Brooks  No Man's Land encompassed the Panhandle counties of Beaver, Texas, and Cimarron.
Osage Nation   Relocated in 1871-1872.
Otoe-Missouria   Relocated 1880-1881.
Ottawa   Relocated in 1867.
Pawnee   Relocated 1873-1875.
Peoria   Relocated in 1867 under the Omnibus Treaty.
Ponca   Forcibly relocated from Nebraska in 1877.
Quapaw   Relocated in 1833 after signing a treaty with the U.S. government on May 13, 1833.
Sac & Fox   Removed from Kansas following an 1867 treaty. First group arrived in November 1869.
Seminole Nation Linda Simpson One of the "Five Civilized Tribes".
Seneca-Cayuga    The Seneca-Cayuga tribe arrived in 1832 after exchanging their lands in Ohio for western territory under the Indian Removal Act.
Shawnee Linda K. Lewis Relocated from Kansas 1869-1871
Tonkawa   Relocated in two main phases: first in 1859 to the Leased District (near present-day Anadarko), and later, following the 1862 Tonkawa Massacre and a period back in Texas, permanently removed in 1884-1885 to present-day Kay County.
Unassigned Lands LaRae Halsey-Brooks  
Wea   Removal from Kansas in 1867 under the Omnibus Treaty of 1867.
Wichita & Caddo   Relocated in 1859.
Wyandotte   Began relocating from Kansas in 1857 with the final major removal occurring in 1867 following the post-Civil War treaty.
