Interview #:

Mr. Duncan came here from Kentucky and settled near Bennington; he was married to Annie BATTICE, a Choctaw. Later he moved to Mayhew and with several other citizens bought the site where Boswell now is from Jim TIM, a negro. After the deal was closed, the negro wanted to go back on the trade; he said he thought it over and decided that he did not want to raise his children in town. He said, "Nigger raised in town is no good".

This old negro would attend the white people's church every Sunday and would stand in the corner in the back of the church. When the communion, bread and wine, was passed the preacher would ask if everyone had been served and then would give the communion to Jim Tim.
